During our recent spring break vacation to Mexico, our family decided to split our stay between Hotel Xcaret México and Grand Velas Riviera Maya. I had heard incredible things about Grand Velas over the years and I wanted to experience it first hand to better understand what makes it one of the most highly recommended luxury all-inclusive resorts in Mexico. After spending time exploring the property, dining at its restaurants, relaxing in its spacious suites, and experiencing the amazing service, it quickly became clear why so many rave about this resort. One of the things that makes Grand Velas Riviera Maya so unique is that it’s essentially three different resorts in one. Each section offers its own distinct atmosphere, allowing guests to choose the vacation style that best fits their travel preferences, making it an excellent choice for multigenerational families or groups traveling together. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful jungle retreat, a lively beachfront setting for the whole family, or an adults-only luxury escape, you’ll find it at Grand Velas. Best of all, every section includes personal concierge service, 24-hour room service, gourmet dining, and access to beautiful pools.
Zen Grand – Nestled within the lush Mayan jungle, Zen Grand offers a peaceful, wellness-focused escape surrounded by nature. While it’s not located directly on the beach, a complimentary three-minute shuttle provides quick and easy access to the oceanfront areas of the resort. Guests who enjoy tranquility, spa experiences, and a more secluded atmosphere often find this section to be the perfect retreat. It also tends to be the most budget-friendly option within Grand Velas.
Ambassador – The heart of the family-friendly experience, Ambassador sits directly on the beach with sweeping Caribbean views and a vibrant atmosphere. It’s easy to spend the day moving between the expansive oceanfront pool and the soft white-sand beach, making it a favorite for families who want convenient access to both.
Grand Class – Located adjacent to Ambassador, Grand Class is an adults-only (16+) sanctuary designed for those seeking a more refined and tranquil escape. Featuring luxurious oceanfront suites, an elegant infinity pool overlooking the Caribbean Sea, and a quieter atmosphere, it’s an ideal choice for couples, honeymooners, or anyone celebrating a special occasion while still enjoying access to all the amenities Grand Velas has to offer.
2. Spacious suites that offer room to truly relax
One of the first things we noticed when we walked into our suite at Grand Velas Riviera Maya was just how spacious—and gorgeous—it was. All suites, including the entry-level accommodations, feature private terraces, oversized bathrooms, and thoughtful layouts that make them feel more like luxury residences than traditional hotel rooms.
As a family with teenagers, we especially appreciated having enough space for everyone to spread out and relax without feeling crowded. The bathroom alone felt like our own private spa, complete with a soaking tub, double vanities, and plenty of room to unwind after a day in the sun. Many suites also feature outdoor seating areas, plunge pools, and stunning views of the ocean, lush jungle, or beautifully landscaped resort grounds. After a few hours spent at the beach or pool, we looked forward to returning to our suite to cool of and relax before getting ready for dinner, or watch the sunrise after sleeping like champs.

One of the details that truly sets Grand Velas apart is that every suite includes personal concierge service. Unlike many luxury resorts where concierge access is reserved for club-level guests, every guest at Grand Velas receives personalized attention throughout their stay.
From making restaurant reservations and arranging spa appointments to helping coordinate special celebrations or simply answering questions, our concierge team was so friendly and helpful and easy to stay in touch with through WhatsApp.
4. Incredible dining that goes far beyond the typical all-inclusive experience
Dining is one of the biggest reasons I recommend Grand Velas Riviera Maya. The resort offers an impressive collection of restaurants featuring everything from authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood to French, Italian, and Asian-inspired dining. We started our trip with lunch at the buffet and were blown away by the selections–everything from sushi, to prime cuts of meat, fresh salads and fruit and desserts to keep the kids impressed. One afternoon, we enjoyed a decadent seafood lunch on the beach and on our final evening, we enjoyed a delightful experience at an actual Michelin-starred restaurant that offers an innovative multi-course tasting experience. The food was beautifully presented, but the atmosphere was welcoming and family friendly.
Another detail that stood out to us was how accommodating the resort was with food allergies and dietary concerns. The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, making it easy to enjoy the dining experience without the added stress of worrying about what was safe to eat.
And for wine lovers, Grand Velas offers more than 40 wines included with dinner, adding another layer to an already impressive culinary experience. From a casual lunch by the pool to an unforgettable tasting menu, dining at Grand Velas truly feels like part of the luxury experience—not simply something that’s included with your stay.

5. Kids/Teens Clubs
One of the standout features for families at Grand Velas Riviera Maya is its exceptional Kids’ Club and Teens’ Club, both of which go far beyond the typical resort activity space.
Designed for children ages 4–12, the Kids’ Club is a fully supervised environment where younger guests can spend the day enjoying arts and crafts, storytelling, movies, board games, interactive games, and creative workshops where they can make masks, bracelets, and piñatas. The program also incorporates cultural and outdoor activities that introduce children to the destination through fun, hands-on experiences, making it much more than just a place to play.
The Teens’ Club is equally impressive. Designed for guests ages 13–17, it features a dedicated lounge with video games, pool tables, foosball, and comfortable gathering spaces that feel more like a trendy hangout than a traditional kids’ club. Two of the biggest highlights are the private movie theater and golf simulator, and as both of our kids love golf, they enjoyed perfecting their swings on the simulator.
And while your kids and teens are busy making memories of their own, parents can enjoy a little well-deserved time to themselves—whether that’s relaxing by the pool, enjoying a leisurely lunch, or escaping to the award-winning SE Spa for a little peace and quiet.
6. A world-class spa and wellness experience
Who doesn’t love a little spa time? One of my favorite highlights of Grand Velas Riviera Maya is its award-winning SE Spa, a 90,000-square-foot sanctuary inspired by ancient Mayan healing rituals which is often considered one of the best spa experiences in all of Mexico.
A highlight of the spa journey is the hydrotherapy circuit, which is included as part of your spa experience. I arrived about an hour prior to my facial and was led through guided sequence of water-based wellness areas including a circuit of sauna, ice and eucalyptus steam rooms, sensory showers, and a large hydrotherapy pool with massage jets. All of this is included when you book a treatment, so don’t miss out on this incredible perk!
After completing the hydrotherapy circuit, guests continue into treatment rooms for customized massages, facials, and holistic therapies inspired by both modern wellness techniques and ancient Mayan traditions. The most unique part of my journey was experiencing the pre-treatment wellness ritual, which is designed to prepare your body and mind before your service. Grand Velas incorporates elements inspired by Mayan healing traditions, so many treatments begin with grounding rituals and aromatherapy rather than going straight into the massage or facial. My favorite part was the welcoming foot ritual – where your feet are immersed in a warm bowl containing mineral salts, herbs, flower petals, or aromatic essences. This is often accompanied by gentle cleansing or exfoliation and is meant to help you transition into a relaxed state.
7. Unique onsite activities
This resort offers so many unique activities including a honey tasting experience, eco tours–including an onsite cenote, star gazing and a bike tour showcasing the property. Beach volleyball, paddleboarding, kayaking, wine tasting, tequila and mezcal, cooking lessons, meditation, foam party, ice bath, a cacao ceremony, soccer, flag football, water basketball, yoga, pilates, barre, functional training, cycling, zumba and more!
